No it is not the range of the grav field.
Grav field which isdefined as the grav force on a unit mass. Hence this becomes zero only at infinite distance.
And the formula used also is not apt, as we can have a final vel = 0 for a body which can then fall back. For it to really escape the field, its K.E. should be > its grav binding energy which gives us
(1/2) m v^2 = G M m / R.
